Like the keyboard shortcuts etc. you added.  Reality is that it is hard as hell to keep up with technology.  Keyboard short cuts are disappearing as fast as keyboards.  Touch screen is the way things are going.  Just something to keep in mind.  For example a laptop is not usable in the environment where I use kinovea.  It must be a tablet format.  With phone use and Ipads running programs like V1-Golf, Coaches Eye etc this is most likely going to become the expectation on how things work.  Me I cant afford those tools.  so its a 4yr old pen style PC tablet  lol. 

Note: V1 Golf and Coaches Eye is now out on Win8 and coupled with what everyone expects that computers will all be heading toward which is touchscreen usage.....??? Granted programs mentioned above have nothing on the science end of analysis that Kinovea has but that is the beauty of Kinovea....... it could easily be a day to day teaching tool as well as a more sit down in  your personal lab movement science tool.

no I dont work for below  folks in any way.  Just found them searching for ideas with my cam.   They have lenses and focusing kits etc.  Even a camera case for better application flexibility. Good prices too.

Now that being said......... before I found those guys....... here is my personal modifications...; hmmmm ok.... too bad. It appears there is no uploading pics to here. So this probably wont make since with out pics but....here goes.

Note: This is for a convertible lap top.  AKA the laptop has a screen that rotates and folds flat across the keyboard creating  a Touch pad. This is an old version so it is NOT finger touch but with a special Stylus pen.  ( HP2710P laptop) It did NOT have a camera at all.  I use this unit in the tablet mode and thus needed a rear facing camera.

. Disassembled PS camera case. It has several real screws. Just unscrew and carefully it can be pried apart. BE CAREFUL

. bastardized the case cutting it up some including removing the base
. Put bastardized camera and case back together.

. Disassembled a cheap laptop cooling pad. HINT Your laptop last years longer if you always use a cooling pad
. Cut a hole in back of pad for the camera's USB cable
. put USB cable thru the hole
. hot glued camera to back of this laptop cooler pad atop the cable hole cut in above step. This creates a rear facing camera
. hot glued a 4 port USB hub into the inside of the cooler case as well
. cut an opening in cooling case for access to two of the four ports in the hub. The remaining two used by camera and power
  supply for fans in the cooler as described below.
. plugged camera into one of the ports of this 4 port hub. Hot glued the USB cord out of the way inside the cooler's case
. removed the female cooling pad power usb port from the edge of the cooling case and put it inside the cooler as well.
   Left  the cable attached to it and also tucked it all inside. Extra cable held out of the way with duct tape s I had done to it
   previously. Could have hot glued it too.
. plugged this USB power cord moved above to the 4 port hub as well
. the USB 4 port unit's cord now extends out where the cooling pads USB power's female jack use to reside.
. reassembled the cooling pad.
. Industrial Velcro attaches the modified cooling pad to the back of laptop.  Plug the 4port hub single usb cord to the laptop
. Made from a scrap piece of carpeted Gymnastic Ethafoam; a large 2" thick pad with holes in it for camera. Also put in it
   channels for cooling pad's fans to get air  .
. Velcro this too back of cooling pad w/attached camera so whole laptop and cooler can sit on a flat surface. Has to be done
   because PS camera is now in the way.  I knew I had access to this foam.  Without this I probably would have cut and glued
   the camera inside the cooling pad case in a different manner.  May still do so after looking at videos on above web site.

If anyone uses a pic hosting site that will stay around long enough to archive these pics for any fool that wants to copy what I did tongue ....... let me know if your willing to host these pics.  I don't have one.  Use to but they close them, and or shift things around which changes the URL etc. thus they often end up in the long run to be horrible for archiving pics on forums like this. For a short while they are fine.

Coaches Eye ....... which is a scaled down quick use Kinovea like program is now out for Windows 8.  Before it was ONLY an android App.   It's original programmer was/is a gymnastics coach. 

I do not know if it saves video to a format you can upload into Kinovea on another system (desk top?) for further analysis

Bit the bullet after making final decision on what used laptop/tablet to buy on a coaches budget.   So above questions now refer to a

2010? era laptop/tablet HP2710p   Converts from Laptop to tablet.
Wacom type touch screen  (aka- input via the stylus on screen or with a keyboard.  Not finger touch)
4gb ram (presently two but new ram on the way)
Centuron?  dual core
Win.7  64bit  (Would switch to Fedora OS if kinovea was available in Linux HINT HINT HINT)

Now got to budget in a clip on webcam that can do what is needed.  Open to suggestions.

Use tablet for daily enrolment record keeping but most importantly for skill/drill acquisition record keeping and lesson individualizing. Thus the need for something larger than 10" tablets.   List and records are used to do on the fly decisions for individualising instruction based on student's needs. Typical tablets have too small a screen for getting quick view of a good size chunk of this information. Having to swipe around screens is a waste of time and IMHO breaks up the instructors thought process.

ok...... Im switching to an old convertable lap top with Win. 7 (AKA has a bit of a tablet like feature to it) and would like to use Kinovea QUICKLY to show students a clip just videoed and point out ways to improve Similar to say how someone would use Coaches Eye, V1Golf etc etc.

what are your suggestions for using in this manner......... besides of course adding a rear facing camera to the lap top.

Caveat to that... We also will have registered with a website where there is a catalog of video's of athletes performing certain skills.  Would be great to also FAST pull one into the side by side screen mode of Kinovea so our athlete and coach can compare... but we need to access this FAST with out clicking around.  So maybe make double viewing mode the default one?   Videos are youtube played mostly and not stored on the laptop/pad but accessed via a LAN network.  The catalog of videos is a website off the internet and videos are stored on their servers. I dont think they actually play from youtube indirectly but maybe they do?


So here I must apologize.. My knovea is very old version.  I've not toyed with it in a while so accessing youtube video for viewing  in one of the side by side screens or for analysis may already be a quick  process in the versions beyond the one I last used.

Did several search attempts but must be using the wrong key words.  Looking for info on writing a starting/opening string that will open kinovea in ready to film mode.  Swear I remember this discussed before but I can't find it.

The goal would be... on a pad/laptop w/ Win8 ... have ability  Kinovea Novice (recreational sport class coach) to hit an icon that opens Kinevoa right into the mode to video record an athlete!.  A one click and go thing.  In a teaching environment we don't have time to click thru various things to get into record mode.  These coaches wont need any other knowledge to use the other tools of Kinovea.  BUTTTT us masters coaches with bit more Kinovea savy can use those tools if we choose. Just need FAST access due to the pace of the instructional environment.    The camera will always be the same (camera on the pad/laptop) Also to be able to quickly with only one stroke view the video... in slow motion after recording. 


Any suggestions on key words to point me to a thread on such a topic if any exist?

since this is open source......... how about putting a call out to linux folk to convert this program to linux? Linux's  Ubuntu is popular but being replaced I hear by Linux's Fedora anyway........ though maybe I heard wrong?  Granted Linux is Linux...... The name (Fedora, Ubuntu etc) is just the face, look and feel......... linux is the engine no matter the name.

Myself I use ONLY fedora/Linux  Operating system . Can not afford a new power computer AND pay for Win OS so Linux was only option.

Kinovea is ONLY program thus far I need that is not available in Linux.  PLEASE get Kinovea in Linux!!!!

If anyone knows of a program like kinovea in linux......... please speak up.

Base Example-

. poster board w/ an image on it.  (represents video as a whole or a key image)
. Clear plastic Sheet with image painted on it  (represents trace, angle, grid...) used to overlay the poster board to highlight things on the posterboard.

permanently paint key image's data on the video-  does just that... it overlays the two permanently together.  The plastic in above example is slipped out like a magician pulling a table cloth leaving the dishes perfectly in place.   Thusly of course in this example.... now the paint adheres to the poster board... making two things become one never to be seperated again.  Whole thing folded up and stored in a file, in a file cabnet.    Menu Label describes that just fine

Combine video and key images data in the file- does just that.... takes two (or more) pieces such as example above and puts them in one location. They can be seperated still after taking them out of where they were stored. Using example- Both Poster board and clear plastic sheet are folded up together and placed in a file.  Again Label seems to fit this just fine too.

The deselecting and selecting data points in frames/Key Images idea presented above really is hitting me as to making huge differnece in the ability of this program's tracking engine.  For example... in the real world of Biomechanical analysis.... the researcher who is using video... goes thru alot of preperation to make it easy for the camera to pick up undistracted data and send it to the computer for processing.  Soooo... they use  rooms void of background distraction..... they place refective markers on joints of the athletes body and or object. They;  prior to data collection, sych the computer program with data collection points so during collection it will deal with ONLY those points.

What I am proposing is to do this all on the computer instead of physically.  Mark/Select data collection points on the body/object (same as we do now for tracking.. but allow for multi frame selection/Key Image for identification of same point on moving person/object thru out the vid) and wipeing out distracting data with a Deselecting sweeper. 

infact with select and deselect tool along with the software's tracking engine IMHO it might even be possible to convert to simple 3d stick figures like used in the sample video.  WOW... talk about jumping the potential of this program sky high.

Joan... hugs and kiss, lots of beer, anything I can give you to encourage you to dive into this area.  Wish to hell I could give ya money.... -blush sad  starving coach here.  Literally- filing for bankruptcy this week  sad

Would it help the Auto track work better if the user had the ability to mark/Select the object desired to be tracked in as many frames/Key Images manually as they desire to improve the auto tracks ability to follow that object. Would assume the more manual marks made, the more accurate "auto" tracking becomes.  Guess this would be maunally assisted auto tracking.?

I was tracking the hips of a Artistic Gymnast on High Bar with objects in the back ground and fore ground. Those objects the auto tracker would missmatch with the one I had selected on the athlete and cause major missdirection of path.  Miss matches were with things like wall trusses, cables that hold up the bar, verticle post that holds up the bar, support cables on nearby  equipment etc. 

Now that I think about it.... another Possible solution; instead or in addition too, idea above of multiple selecting of object to be tracked ..... how about a tool with adjustable size (width/hight)*  that you can sweep around a frame(s)/Key Image(s) "deselecting" large amounts of data in areas of frame(s) so that the auto tracker engine does not even looks at it data in those areas. 

My feeble brain seems to think each of these should allow the auto track engine to be even more accurate, even more so with both used in conjunction to one another cause it ends up giving the auto tracker engine a more finite set of data to work with

*adjustable size similar to how you can adjust the size of a paint brush in photoshop/drawing programs.
